Our Story

It was a crisp autumn morning in Downpatrick when Ernest Hanlon unlocked the heavy wooden doors of the family’s century-old shop. As he stepped inside, the familiar scents of freshly baked baguettes and ripe produce instantly enveloped him, transporting him back through the generations.

Ernest’s great-grandfather, Neal, had founded this very business in 1902, returning home to Northern Ireland after the Second Boer War with dreams of opening a modest fruit and vegetable shop. Little did Neal know that his small venture would one day grow into a veritable food emporium, thriving for four generations under the Hanlon name.

New Generations

As Ernest flipped the open sign and began arranging the day’s fresh seafood and artisanal cheeses, he couldn’t help but smile, thinking of the countless memories made within these walls. This was where his father and grandfather had taught him the art of selecting the finest local ingredients, preparing the perfect sandwich, and treating each customer like family. Now, Ernest worked alongside his son, Ernest Jr., who had joined him in carrying on the family’s traditions.

Ernest knew he had big shoes to fill as the latest Hanlon to carry on this legacy, built upon generations of hard work by his forebears and the loyal team of employees who had served alongside them over the decades. These dedicated individuals, some hailing from Hanlon families themselves, approached their roles with a deep sense of pride and ownership, treating each customer like a cherished friend.

As Ernest, his son Ernest Jr., and the Hanlons crew set to work, readying the store for another bustling day, Ernest felt a swell of pride. This was his heritage, his livelihood, his true calling  one that was intertwined with the stories and memories of the community he loved. With a deep breath, he knew they were prepared to welcome another day of serving the town, alongside the family and friends who had made Hanlons the beating heart of Downpatrick for over a century.
